In Reply to: automatic transmission does not engage - HELP!!! posted by rs on August 30, 2001 at 11:36:12:

My mother had a 100k mile '92 325 that started to have an intermeidate engagment problem. She dumped it for. My manager had a '93 325 which started having the same problem. His was diagnosed as electromagnetic interference from bad plug wires. New wires, no problem.

If your tranny is hard broke and won't engage no matter what, this probably isn't it.

I suggest having it taken to another shop and eat the cost of another diagnostic. There should be pressure ports on the tranny and readings from those along with the computer should tell a maechanic who understands the tranny what is wrong without dropping it.

94 530iT - automatic:

Desperately need some help since i love this car but have been advised to possibly go ahead and trade it in (we are in the market for a odyssey - 2 year old needs space) since the mechanic that took a look at it was unable to diagnose the problem.

He hooked it up to the computer but nothing conclusive. He runs one of the the top auto mechanic shops here in honolulu so, i trust him.

I was tearing around some hilly areas when all of sudden, the transmission would not engage. I can't recall if it revved or not. But we were not moving. i had it towed to his shop and when he ran the car and tested it over the next 3 days, he was not able to replicate the problem.

He said that it MAY be transmission problem... a new transmission would be 5000+... he could drop the transmission (?) but since i am in the market for a minivan, he said i might want to consider just trading or selling it...

right now, the car runs great... not sure what to do... i really like the car and would like to keep it and for as long as it "lives"...

does anyone have any ideas on this? i've given a very general description but that's the only way i can describe it...
