You can use BBQ paint from homedepot, engine paint from auto store or hobby paint - Testors #1246. The high heat paint will prevent the bulb from heating up too high and in some cases turn the paint a burnt brown colour after prolonged use. I found some chrome paint from the craft store to get a mirror look even though I had silver high temp paint.
The bulb will still light up as before with the amber light blinking through the paint like stock giving almost 95-100% of the original light. It may depend on how thick and even you put the coating on. I coated my bulbs entirely silver. One steady pass on the spray will coat the entire bulb so spray just enough to cover so you can barely see the orange.
