I talked to the owner of an indy shop and also to one of the mechanics in the shop and they highly recommend the M50 engine for its low maintenance and longevity. I was also looking for good gas mileage due to a long commute.

Key features of the M50:
- timing chain - no belt to change!
- hydraulic valves - no adjustments!

- 4 valves per cylinder
- direct coil ignition for each plug

Apparently the only weak features are the plastic parts used in the coolant system - water pump impeller (usually already changed out by most owners), plastic fittings in radiator, etc.

It's a BMW tradition to have weak water pumps. It's best to replace them every 60-75K miles whether they need it or not because they don't go much longer than that. It's an inexpensive part. Use BMW factory coolant! It's expensive but cheap insurance in the long run.

Replace all hose and belt every 5 years whether they need it or not. Replace the battery after 4 years or so.
