The M50 is a high compression engine and works better with high octane. BMW (as well as M-B, Porsche, etc.) engines are so expensive that I don't mind (well... somewhat) the extra expensive when I think of replacement cost. I tend to keep my cars a long time. Had my '78 530i for 22 years before selling it.
