I'm a firm believer in the factory coolant. There are other coolants that should work with aluminum engines out there but there's something different about the BMW coolant.

I had the brown effect with my former '78 530i too - changed to brown a short time after coolant change. I wasn't aware of the need for factory coolant and don't know what my indy shop used. About a year later it sorted itself out after the second change. Still a mystery.
