Ellipsoid, DE or projector lenses use a combination of reflector and lens to focus the light. They look like an eyeball and you may have seen cars with these lights. See here for one:

They also have that ring that blocks about 40% of the generated light, which is why they suck! Euro ellipsoids are marginally better, but not much.

The latest and greatest are the lamps you see on the E46 cars. Plain front glass, super-precise reflector and precisely made bulbs that position the filament accurately in the reflector. All this makes for good utilization of generated light.

this may sound a little stupid, but please tell me the difference between eppsiloid headlights and normal and would my 1990 525 have eppsiloids?
