Checking Front Strut Mounts (archive)

What's the best way to check the front strut mounts? I've been working on exorcising a clunk from the front end of my '95 525i (yes, it's fuel injected) and have so far replaced the thrust bushings and sway bar links. These did the trick on my previous E34, but the noise remains on this one. There's a pronounced clunk from the left front corner when I hit a bump or break in the pavement of any note. The shocks both leak and the front end is 'wallowy', so I'm sure that I need shocks. I would like to know the best way to check the strut mounts without actually pulling them before I order all of the parts. Any advice is appreciated.
