Welcome to the world of E34's! It would be wise of you to learn your 525's history. Your mechanic could be absolutely right, or he could be taking you for a ride. Essentially, an E34 needs to be serviced every 15k miles. 1st at 15k, then 45k, then 60k, then 75k, and so on. Inspections alternate between Inspection I (at 15k, 45k, 75k, etc), and Inspection II (at 30k, 60k, 90k, etc). So check any service records on the car and make sure those have been done. If you're not sure, go ahead with an Inspection II service (see Bruno's linked site below for description of what is done at each Inspection).
525i's of your vintage (mine too) have hydraulic valve lifters, so the valves do not require adjustment. The ticking can come from a lot of places; fuel injectors, VANOS system, loose spark plugs, ignition coils arcing, to name a few. If you're new to the car, it might be worth it just to go through an Inspection with your mechanic; go when he can walk you through the car, showing you what he's inspecting/replacing and why. That will help you a ton down the road. By the way, check this link to see the service history of my '95 525ia since we got it in '99.
Check out Bruno's E34 page for good info on your car!
