I don't know how the system works down there but here in Canada, you have a right to have your case heard for free if the value of the argument is less than 5k. The judges have heard all the bullshit stories and then some so you can't get away with coming in there and saying you had to go to the bathroom or you left something on the kitchen but they fall for two things:
1) Sobby people (cry and beg, I had my fine suspended because I said I'm a poor university student, Judge says, good student? Yes your Honor. Good luck son, fine suspended.)
Here's a story my friend told me:
He went to a grocery store and to do that he had to take a short trip on the highway. The turnoff to the store is like 20 m before the off ramp ends. He pulled in, bought his stuff and got back onto what was left of the offramp to merge on the road. He started accelerating when a cop waves him down at the end of the ramp. He said he was speeding coming off the highway. My friend tried to explain but the cop said go to court, see if I care (being generally rude). So he went. The thing is he had a receipt with a time on it. The time which the cop wrote down as the time of the offense (I think he had to write down when he tagged him with radar) was the time when my friend was getting milk. The judge asked to see the bill, said Have a nice day Sir.
Then the cop had the nerve to catch up to my friend outside. He shook his hand and said it was one of those days. Fucker, my friend would have to pay 150 bucks for one of his days??? I don't understand why cops don't go behind bars for this. Are they superhuman? Some seem to believe so.
