I'm the 3rd owner of a '94 540iA, and it has been sitting in the dealers' parking lot now for about 3 weeks while BMWUSA and the extended warranty company (AI Warranty Services out of Maitland, FL)argue about who's going to get the bill for my short block replacement. I've had the car for 3 years, bought as a BMW Certified Car, and since it was my first BMW, I didn't know anything about the fuel sulfur problem. Car now has about 81K miles on it, and since it is out of the 6 year warranty for time, BMW is stonewalling on the coverage and the warranty company is insisting that the engine be torn down to the bare block so they can "verify the damage" - at my cost, of course. And, BTW, they said that they probably wouldn't cover it anyway because the sulfur damage is a "factory design problem".

This car has been a lemon from the day I bought it. The stereo died within 50 feet of the dealer's lot on the day I bought it, it has gone through four O2 sensors, a catastrophic water pumpshaft failure that also took out the radiator, the A/C compressor, PS pump, transmission vibration damper, complete sets of PW solenoids AND brake rotors, and two sets of Z-rated rubber. That's a huge repair list for a car that gets all of the recommended service and is driven in the South - no temp extremes (unless you call 100F an extreme) and no snow and/or salt.

Overall, I'd have to say that I'll never buy one of these pigs again - no matter how much fun they are to drive. The #$& car has to run before you can drive and enjoy it!

Any input from any poster on how to get some action from BMW on this problem? So far all I have gotten is screwed.

Have any of you had problem with your car, regarding the M60/sluphur issue? I am looking to buy a 540i and I am skeptical of buying it because of this. I have done the research and when looking for one I plan to check the records and the casting numbers on the short block. The extended warranty is almost over, if not already (it's been 6 years!!). If I were to purchase one, I don't know how I would get a leakdown test for it because I doubt the owner selling it to me would lend me his car to do it, even though I would pay for it. The only way I could get a leakdown test done on the car I wanted is if I were to buy it through a dealer, which I wont do because of the mark up prices they sell the cars for. What have you all done?

Dan
