Don't believe the hype - BMW is looking to afford drivers a "Honda-like" ownership experience, where you simply drive the thing and don't have to spend any money fixing - this works well, as long as you trade / sell your car every three years, and always buy new - some poor person gets stuck with a blown tranny at 80K as a result - go ahead and get the fluid changed, and while you're in there, get the filter replaced - additionally, there is an upgrade kit (at least for my '94 540i auto) which replaces a number of small, plastic check-balls and a plastic valve (yes, there LOTS of plastic pieces parts in the transmission) which are KNOWN to go bad (heat causes them to shrink over time) - this will cost you a few bucks (around a grand) but will go a long way in preventing a problem later... This kit is a standard BMW parts kit, btw..
