In general, one of the component that shares a belt with the waterpump is almost always the alternator.Illumination of the red warning alternator lights is a direct indication of a failed water pump belt.Immediate stop is required,of course within the safety limits.
Damage may not be apparent now.If the car overheated then cylinder head damage is possible.Nothing else other than that.

Driving home today (94 530ia) - power steering goes out, alternator light comes on, and the temp. gauge starts heading north. No sounds or other signs of a bad belt (in case you hadn't guessed - the one around the water pump and other accessories). Thankfully was almost home (turned heater on full blast rest of way - less than 1/2 mile). Open hood and the belt is shredded and some coolant has boiled out.

Question - other than replacing what is broke/missing (belt & coolant) - any damage that could be done? What/where to look for it? thanks.
