I think what it comes down to is that BMW wants you to buy from them, so the newer changers have to match the head unit (?). Aftermarket changers will work on the older head units (with or without adaptors) but you might be stuck getting a factory one. Go into a dealer and ask what the unit partnumber is, then search ebay, or privately for that unit.
