Hello All,

Does anyone know the function / purpose of the black plastic tape that's attached to the upper door opening trim located on the car body? I've looked at some earlier E34s and they don't seem to have this. The later ones do. Mine is a 1992 525iA.

Mine was damaged on the driver's opening and I peeled it off. It's positioned where the upper door seal contacts the trim piece on the body. I suspect it might prevent squeaking when the rubber gasket rubs against the trim as the body twists a bit whilst driving. Is this plastic tape necessary? Apparently you have to buy the whole trim piece to replace this. Can I just use some black electrical tape?
