My '85 GS 12A has an 1146 Wankel ROTARY engine, with two trochoidal rotors. Mine is a 1st generation, old body style, before Mazda decided to copy Porsche's 944...
My engine has never been opened up, and it has 171k miles on it. 0-60 is in the high 8's, low 9's, bone stock (except for high flow cat).
The epitome of the RX7 line in my opinion was the '85 GSL-SE, a 13B (1308 cc) normally aspirated fuel injected engine good for 155+ hp, with rear disc brakes and limited slip diff. Reliable, reliable, reliable, and quick, quick, quick. I completely disagree that old rotaries don't last long. Mine just turned 17 (built in 9/84!), and still pulls hard to redline. I do agree that the 3rd generation models do suffer turbo failures, as well as apex seal problems, but look at it-you're getting 255 hp out of 1308 cc!!! That is one tightly wound spring!
