The 1 hour drive it took to get there and peer pressure :).... I'm never taking my car to a National Park again.
Nick:
Both the transmission and differential have breathers and can take in water. It is also true that in standing water the bow waves from the front wheels converge at the diff and make the effective water level higher, allowing the diff to suck in water.
It is not a big deal other than maybe a seal getting blown out in terms of damage for while, but I would just change the lubes out as oil floats on water so there might be lack of lubrication at some point if you continue driving. Don't know about auto trannies.
What stopped you from refusing to go through the river?

So, me and a bunch of friends went to this place called red rock and no one knew we had to cross one large river, several streams and rough, rough road. I was so mad when I saw that road and worried about my baby, I crossed the river with no problem, but a corvette got stuck. I heard some british guys saying, "stupid american cars." It was funny, too bad they were driving a Kia. My car made some funny noises when I started it up, I'm keeping my fingers crossed that nothing is wrong or I'm never driving anyone anywhere again. Anyway other than that, my car seems fine, we'll see what happens when I wash my car.
