A local, non BMW dealer, mechanic who specialises in BMW's told me my manual transmission 1988 530i requires automatic transmission fluid in it's transmission. He backed up his claim by showing me a recent 318i that was on the lift, it did indeed have a sticker on the transmission stating ATF must be used.
My owners manual states the use of gear oil. Hence I have conflicting informtion.
Can anyone confirm what is the correct fluid?

Paul, sorry can`t help. I want hear if your car have the same problem as mine. I have a manual 1989 525i, but it dont give me smooth gear shifts, the car give a slight shake wen I release the clutc. But I have no problem putting it into gear.

The shake on take off is probably a rough and overheated flywheel with distinctive hot spots on it.Replacing clutch and turning the flywheel(if still possible) will correct it.
