Thanks Geoff.
Further fiddling since I posted the query has been interesting. I put a bulbholder and bulb (from the low fuel indicator) into the socket for the "check engine" indicator on the dash and tried the stomp test. It worked, giving me a code of "1211". I have now soldered a pair of fine wires to the pads on the circuit board for the "engine check" indicator light and run these out for connection to a LED test light when required.
However, according to http://www.bonnevillemotorwerks.com/dmeapps.html the code 1211 corresponds to the Digital Motor Electronics control unit. Once the code is started with the five stomps, it repeats endlessly and doesn’t stop. Trying to clear the codes as explained on http://www.bmwe34.net/E34main/Trouble/Engine_codes.htm doesn’t work.
Anyone able to enlighten me further??
Colin, 535is Glen Waverley, Victoria.
