How to diagnose steering box? (archive)

My '95 525iT is still suffering from some looseness or slop in the steering. So far I've replaced thrust-arms (due to shimmy problem not steering), outer tie-rods, idler arm, sway-bar links. All of these have made an improvement, but I'm still feeling something odd in the steering. I don't know how to describe it other than give some examples.
When crossing a speed bump at slow speed and at an and angle, I feel a jerk in the steering wheel that seems to be too much. Also this weekend I drove across a small grassy area. I could feel every bump tugging at the steering wheel. My wifes car is also a '95 525i and does not exhibit this problem so I know there's something odd feeling about the steering in this car.
I believe the only things left to replace are the center track rod and the steering box itself.
Any ideas on how to investigate this problem further on my own? I'm about ready to take it to a shop and just accept whatever they tell me is wrong.
