RB,
When you pull it apart, you can pretty much tell
if your strut bearings are still good..mine on
my 735il with 145K were still very good. If you
have over 100K mi on your car, I would change all
suspension components..tie-rod ends, center (drag) link and idler arm and bushing.
I would hold off on the wheel bearings because you
can change those without having the rest of the
suspension apart. Make sure you torque the upper/
lower control arms to spec. with the car in
normal position, i.e. on ramps not on jack stands.
(See Bentley for all suspension torque values)
One thing often overlooked with shimmy is toe angle. If you run neutral toe (straight ahead) and
in particular with less forgiving plus size tire/
wheel combo, you won't load the lash (tolerance)
in the suspension and you will set yourself up
for a resonant frequency, i.e. shimmy. Make sure
you set your toe to spec...you can do this yourself with two long tape measures, measuring
front of tire centerlines to rear of tire centerlines and subtracting the difference.
If you have any questions, send me an E-mail or
post.
Good Luck..you will resolve it with patience..
also balance your wheels with a Hunter machine
if shimmy still exists after doing the above.
George
90 735il/145K..also replacing/lowering front suspension right now.

Got my Sachs sporting kit on Monday and I want to ask a question : I am planning to fight my shimmy by changing all rotating parts (since i changed control arms not a lon time ago) - i will put new rototrs, new wheel bearings, new pads (hate those PBR Metal Masters - too much dust. i think they are even dustier then stock). So my question is what else can i change in suspension??? Strut mounts ??? What parts did you gusy changed when you did your shocks and springs???
Thank you for any response and have a safe day!!!!
