All the people I know that have 525's are very happy with them. The 2.5L engine is a real gem. It's smooth and powerful for it's displacement. The 2.5L is found also in 3 series cars so maintance and parts are going to be a a lot cheaper. Many see the V8's a little complex but there are very nice when they run right. If you want the best possible enigine choice for a 5, get the 535i. One the best engines BMW have ever produced. The 2.5L is a modern engine as well, with some late model (M50) engines having VANOS like the M3 engines.
