If I had it to do over again, I would have bought... an M5. BUT, if I hadn't known that I was going to get a $15K/year raise, I would have bought a 535i. Its power is very close to the 530i, the engines are quite reliable, and there are "assloads" of mods for them. The 530i is the red-headed stepchild of the E34 family.
