S4's are a good bit of fun. not as balanced as I would like, but still entertaining. Chipping the S4 increases the fun factor by a very large portion. Goes from 250hp to 307 or so. An M3 would be better, but new M3 vs new S4 there is a $10k difference... S4 competes more with a 330 in the $40k range. I'd be happy with either.

Must say it was a rather interesting experience. My friend brought her's down today and let me take it for a spin. I've never driven a turbo car before, and the only four wheel drive car I've driven has been my mom's X5. The S4 has an ungodly amount of pull, but it's not linear. You get that kick in the back at 3000 RPM. All in all, a very cool car, and if I didn't know about the virtues of BMW, I'd be dying for one right now. But as it stands, I'd rather have an M3. No turbo lag, and a lot more character, both in the exterior and interior.
