I had purchased a set (4+spare) of Mille Miglia MM11's for my 525iT a couple years ago and had always battled the shimmy problem. These were the 17x8.5 with Pirelli P7000-SS's installed. After replacing the lower control arms, the shimmy had almost gone away, but it was still present.
Several months ago, I swapped tires/rims with a friend who drives a 735iL (E32). He had the OEM 16" cross-spokes (from an E39) and was running with 5mm spacers in front to solve a tire clearance issue.
After swapping, we both had bad shimmy problems. I fixed mine by changing from Pirelli P7000 to Dunlop SP5000 (less sidewall bulge) and removing the spacers. My friend has been battling the shimmy since... more recently, he replaced the upper and lower control arms using the parts for a 750 (harder bushings?).
I had recommended, based on readings here, that he take the car in and have the wheels properly balanced before doing anything else. Well, after the front-end work he took the car to a shop with a Hunter machine... only to find that all the rims had flat-spots. Ironically, the spare rim with a bit of curb-rash was perfectly true.
A fellow on the Z3 board had commented that the Mille rims are a bit soft. He had some on his Z3... I think they were the "Spyder" model, and he claims that he bent his in a situation that most rims should have easily survived.
Now, neither my friend or I can recall ever hitting anything worse than some abrupt pavement transitions and occasional shallow chuck-hole... nothing that we'd think twice about. Is it possible that these rims were out-of-round from the factory, or damaged in shipping along the way? They were shipped to me with the tires installed (new), and there was no signs of damage at all; I can't imagine UPS being able to dent a rim in this manner.
Has anyone else had problems with Mille's?
