I am looking for advice and help on the following:
A few weeks ago, I noticed a brake fluid leak and I have learned it was the slave cylinder instead of the metal line. I replaced the slave cylinder.
Well, yesterday I was driving from Austin, Tx to Dallas, Tx and 2 hours into the trip, the car slipped out of 5th gear and made a high revving sound. I down shifted to 4th and attempted to go back to 5th gear but it would not engage. When I downshifted to 4th and let the clutch out the car shut off completely.
I pulled over, pushed the clutch in, and started the car and attempted to get it into gear. It went into first however the car would not move forward. I attempted to shift into another gear and the car would not engage any gear, including 1st, thereafter.
I smelled a burning smell and notice smoke coming from the hood. The smoke was not heavy. I noticed it was coming above the center area, right in front of the firewall.
I can start the car fine however it will no longer move out of neutral. I called a flatbed tow service and had the car towed back to Austin to a BMW dealership.
The dealership is taking out the transmission and I am going to review it with them.
Worst case scenario, I'm thinking the transmission needs replacing.
Better Scenario, I'm thinking the clutch needs replacing.
Even Better Scenario, I'm thinking there is just a linkage problem.
Do any of you have any recommendations I can keep in mind while I am looking at this with the Dealership Mechanic and Service Manager or other alternatives I should consider?
