My indy BMW mechanic also highly recommended a M50 5er when I was ready to replace my 1978 530i. I definitely prefer the L6s to the V8s - I love the sound and smoothness of BMW sixes. The V8s never seemed like real bimmers to me even though Elvis had a V8 bimmer.

Got my car mainly for commuting and my budget would not be happy with possible repair costs on a V8. Check with the shop as to the comparable Inspection I and II costs. What really concerns me are costs when there are major repairs - you got two of many things - two heads, two exhaust manifolds, exhaust system probably more expensive, etc. The 2 extra plugs aren't too bad but the rest of the stuff adds up!

For economical operation, my choice would be an M50 and for performance I would go for the 535 - these are really quite fast with a stick. If possible higher repair costs are not a factor - then consider a 540i.
