what's the normal gas mileage on a 1990 535i considering if everything is running fine and normal?

i test drove one and when i pressed the AVE MPG it said 11.5 or so... is this for real or it needs a good tuneup? 11 mpg is insane... even if it's a 3.5L

Don't base your mileage assumption solely on the OBC...lots of factors could cause it to be that low (extensive idling, lots of stop and go driving). The real test is fill up, reset odometer, drive till next fill up, divide miles driven by gallons required to fill up, there you have it. Usually my calculated and OBC reported fuel mileage are within .2 to .3 from each other.
