A friend of mine is having problems with the cooling system in his 89 535i. He changed the thermostat, no difference the car still overheats after extended idling. A mobile mechanic speculated that he may have blown head gasket, but after examining the block area for coolant and oil leakage and checking the expansion tank for coolant and oil, both turned checks turned up negative. He has resorted to taking his car in to a shop. Personally, I feel the problem is either the main water pump or the water pump for the heating system. I feel that the water pump for the heater core may be clogged or may have failed causing a clog in the cooling system. Does anybody else have any ideas? How resilient is the head gasket in this car? Will it blow if the car overheats? How succeptible is the head to warpage if the head gasket did blow? Any help would be much appreciated.
