Clonking through the steering column (archive)

My 1990 525i (UK Spec) has had a clonk (not a clunk...) that comes right up through the steering column whenever I hit a bump, pothole, speedbump, etc at just the right angle.

I had heard that the problem might be in the anti-roll bar linkages that connect the strut to the anti-roll bar. I changed out the linkages and now it seems even worse! Before, it only clonked occasionally. Now, its more frequent (but less pronounced). Also, it feels like the whole steering system has lost a "buffer" that dampened the road noise and vibration. I'm also hearing a "box of rocks" sound coming from down there. I think the two conditions are related but not sure.

Any help is REALLY appreciated.

Mark
