Don't buy the car unless you can afford to replace the block if it goes bad. You have no warranty. Sounds like a good value... I'd buy the car, use Amoco Ultimate gasoline (low sulfur) only and have fun. If the engine goes bad then you still come near even... $12,700 plus $4500 replacement equals $17,200. That would be a little high for a pristine 540i but not ridiculous. Go for it if you can afford a future replacement. You could save a bunch if the engine holds up or lose a little if it goes bad. By the way, bargain hard.. bring em down to $12 even, you're taking a big risk. I got a 1994 530i 5 sp. (Nikasil) at a bargain price ... no regrets!

I have a opportunity to buy a '94 540i with 82K mi for $12,700, but original Nikasil motor. Car is in excellent condition, idles smooth and runs great. What should I do?
