I think this is the sort of work you are talking about.
I want a 5 speed in my Touring, and since I would have to go to Europe to find one configured like that, I feel justified in taking that work under contract, though I don't expect to see the money later when I finally sell the car. Resale is not the issue.
If you plan on selling the car, then you have to be concerned with resale value, a reflection of what the car would be worth to someone else.
If you want to keep the car, then what it is worth is only a reflection of what it is worth to YOU, the owner.
For those of us who love our e34's, we may not make modifications while worrying about what the car might be worth to someone else. We consider what we want the car to do, how we want it to handle, how long we expect to keep the car, and how much money we can piss away on our pasttime.
You mention the 550 that just sold on ebay - As the owner of that 550 said in his ebay listing, he was forced, by other financial considerations, to sell his car (and had he chosen a different venue, he may have gotten more money). Until he realized he needed money, he may not have bothered to think about what other people would pay, it was only his current situation that forced him to come to terms with what "other" people would pay.
I've got 6 cars at the moment, and my immediate family has about 40 that we often use in various movie, print and commercial pursuits. Even that sideline is just another way to enjoy the cars - NO ONE in the family regards any automobile as a profit making enterprise or an investment. You will just lose sleep if you try to rationalize a car that way.
BMW's do have generally good resale values, but not many true BMW enthusiasts buy them for just the resale value. This board is stacked with true enthusiasts, so your statement doesn't describe the thoughts of this audience at all. We buy them to enjoy them (and reselling or parting out MAY be part of that enjoyment). We read the forum to find out how to make them (run/sound/look/feel) better. We join the BMW CCA to get more information on same. We like getting dirty, whether we are shade tree hacks, or BMW Certified mechanics. You don't sound like that, but then you haven't said much in the way of self-description.
If people thought cars like the 550i V12 E34 with a 6 speed was the ultimate E34 BMW, they'd back it up with real money... and not bid what a pristine stock 535i would go for with the same mileage and model year...
As for making this a personal hobby like alpinaguy who is an ex BMW mechanic; it makes logical sense for a guy like him..
