First of all, what you see here is not at all representative for the BMW "community". The enthusiasm and passion for the car is genuine and the same all over, but the length the guys here will go in owning/modifying their cars is unmatched by the "others". For one "hack" mechanic that buys a shell and installs F18 engines in it, there are 10+ owners out there that just commute in their "bimmer", happily (ignorance is bliss) sipping away their latte. And the hack mechanic is here because of what he wants to do. (Disclaimer : the E39 board actually has a latte sipping FAQ as well as other less civil topics.)
The second aspect of it would be money. While so many people will jump to smash me for saying this, most (and I say _most_) bought their E34s (E30s, whatever) because it offered them the best compromise in power, handling, livability (comfort, space) and aesthetics. Most (again) would have bought more car if it made sense (financially etc) for them. Where I'm getting at is people follow steps : at first is buying a cheap great car; then it's switching to "synthetics"; then the power is not enough and radical things like new engines, boxes and by that time the target (owner) is already sick and contaminated. :-) Could they have afforded an Euro M5 Touring - they would have gone for it from the block starts..
So - I love to see these things (that V12 M30 is amazing) and it is the simplest (well..) manifestation of human nature.
(I could delve into how this is also an impulse conditioned by culture, age and so on but I feel I already achieved my fair share of flames for today..)
willing to switch to S52 _with_ the body.. :-)
