I own both an E34 and E28 535i.
From what I can see, both car are pretty similar, but the E34 is much better and they don't have TRX rims....

For the maintenance, the M30 engine is bulletproof, except sometime a headgasket failure, but nothing major.
Almost every problem on the 535i is known and the cure is also known.

The 5 speed 535i and the M5 are the more popular E34 and the best loved. The 535i is extremely easy to work on.

Go for it if you plan on doing the maintenance yourself and keep the E28 as a winter car...

I have an 87 528e with 170,000 mi. Some problems but nothing major that I can't handle (used to be a mechanic). I have found an 89 535i with 150,000 miles on it for 5,900. My dad has a 94 740il. My question is how good is the 535i in regards to maintenance, performance, reliability? My car is relatively reliable for its age and high mileage. My dad however has been seeing a few large problems now and again. So I am curious, what would you all do? I would ask the e28 group (my usual group, but I see those are the wrong years to ask). Thanks for any help or advise.
