: ONLY get one that has been changet to Alusil. I have a '94 530i, 5-speed. Don't believe the post about the worst engine BMW has made. DO believe it is the worst engine block material that BMW has made. I have a nikasil engine that is running great with 115,000 miles. I get GREAT gas mileage 23 MPG with comined city/ highway and redlining it frequently in the lower gears around town and on on-ramps. Knowing what I do now, I would go with the alusil block only or look for a good 535. Also some have had problems with the automatic transmission, mucho $ repairs. I got that info from the newsletter I get regularly from you can get info on the 540i there also.
