I have an illuminated 6-speed shifter off a late-model M5 (will be selling it on ebay soon). If you look at your shifter, it snaps on to the shaft and has some cuts or grooves to let it spread and snap on. The wires fit through one of these grooves, therefore they just run down the outside of the stick but inside the boot. You can then tap into the wiring under the console. From what I understand (I am still learning about BMW's, mind you), the knobs off most any BMW made since '82 or so will physically interchange. My interpretation of the situation anyway :)

Is it possible to install an illuminated shifter on a car that does not have the wiring harness?
