My black paint worn off on upper edge-all I see is (archive)

I don't think there's any paint under the gray (actually supposed to be black) stuff on our cars. Gordon had his painted recently, and the in-progress shots looked like there was no paint at all.

I know that some E34's have grey-painted side skirts. Below is the instructions for removing the grey paint and revealing the body-color paint that is under the ugly grey paint. I know this works for E36's as I have done it, but not entirely sure about E34's. If anyone can verify one way or another, I would appreciate it. You could always try it on a small, inconspicuous area.
