I did a write-up about this awhile back for my '93 525i. Since the diameter of the intake including Mass Air Sensor is a standard size, there are options for you. Measure the diameter, go to the local Japanese auto race shop and order a pipe extension, filter and associated fasteners. Then remove the covers behind the headlight and attach the pipe and filter. The filter should reach in behind the headlight. This is great because you get cool air behind the headlight and it stays dry since not much rain enters there at speed. My filter is never wet.

Then I made a cardbboard template for a heatshield, cut an aluminum sheet using the template and riveted it together. I didn't worry much about the heatshield being perfectly insulated since the filter is right behind the headlight. It basically bolcks the fanwash and most of the engine heat.

This works very well for me. I hope my pic shows up.
