I have one that seems to be malfunctioning and is always on when key in position 1. I found this while detailing the car one day with the radio on (key in acc 1 position). I got around to the passenger mirror and it was pretty warm.
I live in Atlanta, so I don't get snow and ice, so I can't tell you how fast it melts.
Check your fuses.

Okay so it seems pretty much everyones E34 has heated mirrors. I live up in Madison, WI and we get some pretty heavy snow. I haven't seen my mirrors heat really, but I have seen them encased in ice, and I usually have to scrap them everyday. I am GUESSING they don't work, or never have. Hell, I didnt even know I had them. It didn't mention in the manual anywhere, and doesn't mention them in my Bently manual anywhere either. So I assumed BMW just didn't have them for the E34 or something (yah, dumb assumption eh?)..

Ok.. For those who also live in snow covered states in the winter.. How heated are these mirrors? Will they quickly melt an ice encased mirror? How about just one covered in snow? How long does it take? Do they even help? :) Reason being, im wondering if its worth it to fix them, or maybe they just arent hot enough for where I live so I never notice them. How well do they work. :)
