I hate to be the devils advocate, but Passat wagon lends itself nicely to newer technology and a lot of luxury caqr features assuming you are going for the GLX model..
The 2002 models carry a 4yr/50K warranty! Nice..
The car is 'Brooks Brothers' inside and built very well.. It is an Audi A4 for a lot less money.. Only unfortunate downside is that the 4-motion (4WD) system is only available in an Auto box.. If you are considering an Automatic then forget the Passat and go for the E34 wagon..
By comparing the two as Auto's the E34 wins if you truly like to drive and like to toss the car in a corner and come out faster than the domestic car behind you...
I might get some resistance from the board on this one but I am only giving you my opinion...
Go for it!!!!!

I love BMW's. I currently have an e36 for myself but with a baby on the way I want to get my wife a wagon of some sort. Seeing as how I can't really afford an e39 wagon I'd like to entertain the idea of getting an e34. My dilemma is that I don't want to make a bad decision as far as mileage and newness goes. In other words, I don't want to buy something that I'll end up wanting to sell in a couple of years because it's too worn out. I like the passat wagons alright and could get a 98 or 99 for under 20k but as I said, I love BMW's. Maybe I just need a little confirmation from some of you e34 owner's out there.
