The Passat only has a 2yr 24k mile bumper to bumper warranty when we considered buying one in 1999.. I believe the 98-99 only comes with the 1.8 litre turbo 4 cylinder which has proven problematic on both the Passats and A4 1.8's.. We have a 1999 A6 Avant, and for a fact we know VW/Audi products have more problems, are not as reliable as our E34 525i has been..

Get a 1995 525i touring, it will feel tighter in the long run, They're better built, just because you're getting a newer Passat over an older BMW touring doesn't mean the Passat will prove more reliable.. If anything, it may prove the opposite with a Passat needing a New turbo at 60k miles..

I love BMW's. I currently have an e36 for myself but with a baby on the way I want to get my wife a wagon of some sort. Seeing as how I can't really afford an e39 wagon I'd like to entertain the idea of getting an e34. My dilemma is that I don't want to make a bad decision as far as mileage and newness goes. In other words, I don't want to buy something that I'll end up wanting to sell in a couple of years because it's too worn out. I like the passat wagons alright and could get a 98 or 99 for under 20k but as I said, I love BMW's. Maybe I just need a little confirmation from some of you e34 owner's out there.
