Whether you have LSD or not, if you you get a good set of tires that work well in the snow then you will be okay. Traction is very expensive and dificult to install on a BMW that doesn't have it. LSD can sometime be worse. Because of the percentage of lock-up, you get uneven amount of power to each wheel, this means that when going straight down the road in the snow, your rear will actually begin to turn. An example would be like a row boat where one side is pushing more than the other side.

With an open diff, one wheel spins while the other doesn't, it just rolls. So you stay in a straight line. Believe me, I have tried to spin my wheels in the winter when I had an open diff and my car would stay straight. Now I have a 50% lock-up, but that is a different story.

Just get a good set of tires. If you still want some of that sport driving in the winter when the roads are clear, which is often in Chicago, then go for Dunlop SP5000s, but get them in at least 16in 225/55. With the 55 series and lower the tire has a different tread design that works very well in snow. Just check the tirerack survey. Also these are high performance all season, so you can still have your sport, in all conditions.

Good Luck.

Which would be better for snow, Limited Slip Diff. or Trac Control? Did BMW offer traction control on 5-spd 6 cyl e34's? I have a '93 525iM with no traction ctrl, does that mean I got the LSD? I can pull off a mean set of donuts, so I think i have the LSD. Link to my video of it below.
