You didn't mention if you tried it maunually. Typically (I have a '94, but I believe it applies to all e34s) you can pop off the small headliner panel right behind the interior lights by the rear view mirror. It helps to pop out the light modulr first and reach through to press down the panel (pops out/in).

When the panel is removed, it exposes the sunroof motor and a hex? reciever to manually open/close the roof. This will work if it is an electrical problem, but may not if it is a mechanical or cable problem.

If it is mechanical, you can disengage the motor and slide the suroof (carefully) by hand. Check Bentleys for the proceedure.

94 540i, suroof constantly in use in our currently beautiful weather

The sunroof on our 1991 535i refuses to slide open. It will tilt up at the rear like it should when the button is depressed, but when I try to get it to retract to the fully open position it will not budge.I have had it looked at but the mechanic could not even get it to open enough to be able to remove the headliner so he could remedy the problem. Any suggestions would really be appreciated.
