I think the extra weight of the M30 along with some bad roads and maybe the way the previous owner drove the car have a lot to do with it.

Don't forget that thrust arms are a common failure on e34s too. My 535 goes through a set of thrust arms and control arms every 40-60K miles.

Im up to 80k and stock ones are in perfect shape (95 525iA). Prolly bad luck on your part.
