You may have seen my old post. I have a 1992 525iA and my automatic tranny would go into the fail-safe limp home mode and indicate a fault. Finally diagnosed the cause to be the voltage being too high due to a bad regulator. The regulator is integrate with the alternator. Decided to replace the Valeo alternator with a Bosch unit for the cleaner power output which makes all the on electronics that on board happier. A bit more money for the Bosch but worth it. I believe on my '92 it was a straight swap.

Valeo is having financial difficulties with the tough OEM market. It's a French company. BMW was really watching the pfennings due to the competitive pressure from Lexus and Infinity.
