Smelly converter on 525ia (archive)

Hi Board:

The catalytic converter on my car (1995 525ia w/55K miles) has recently begin stinkin (good old so2).

Anyone know if this is a sign of impending failure, or normal for a car of this age? Any action required?

My car just passed GA emmisions testing with flying colors, so the converter is working fine.
