MY friend has a 300hp Cobra with the handbuilt motor, its actually a very nice car, We revved them up and peeled away from stoplights several times and we have been even. When we are moving then his superior torque will pull on me. I also notice when I dont rev my M5 at the stop light and just floor it then he will pull on me too. The M5 has weight and lacks torque, spool up the 3.6 properly and she will stay with a Cobra, of idle forget it !

Not that I condone racing but I saw these two go from 50-90 ish northbound on the 405 freeway. The Cobra left the M5 pretty good. Yes the M5 was trying, it looked like he initiated the race. The car was lowered, black and looked very clean.

Just how quick is the e34 M5? Would it be close to a late model 540 6-speed or faster?

if the Cobra pulled away easily it wasn't stock. The M5 equal to many mid 13 cars at those speeds. Also if they started at 50mph, the M5 driver was caught below his power band in 3rd most likely. I will always go to 2cnd if 45mph or less for maximum acceleration.
