I dont know anything about those 2 shops. However, I can give you some insight into some other bay area places. I lived in Berkeley for 5 years while going to college and never really found a place that I liked, and I have been to many. Among those that I have had service done at are H&B in Berkeley, Moran Motorsport in Emeryville, Berkeley Motor works in Berkeley, and Weatherford BMW (stealer). All were friendly, but none really gave me a sense of trust. The only place I went to more than once was H&B. They were the most professional (besides the dealer). H&B charged me a lot for stuff I eventually figured out to be quite easy to repair. Also, when I had a differential problem they said the only option I had was a rebuild for $1000. When I asked about used ones they said they couldnt locate one. I located one in about 5 minutes. They also emphasized the differential as the source of noise when in fact it turned out to be a wheel bearing. Moran motorsport was walking distance from weatherford. They were alright, but seemed too much like a junk yard that fixes cars. Their inspection was not very thorough. They did the bare minimum basically. Berkeley motorworks seemed like a nice place. Friendly people. However, they charged me over an hours work to swap out a differential. There is also a place in SF that I heard good things about. Pharudus or something like that. I prefer doing most stuff myself now (dont trust anyone more than myself). Good luck.
