The idea is simple: if you have a wheel with an incorrect offset (such as from an E36), you can space them out to be the correct offset.

In theory, it's okay. In fact, you need longer lugs and also run the risk of not having the wheels "hubcentric" any more... and BMWs are designed to use hubcentric wheels that 1) center the wheel and 2) support the car's weight. This is a significant safety factor to analyze with the particular adapter/wheel combination you are considering.

Personally, I would get correct offset wheels. Safety is too important to save a few bucks.
