Just make sure you check the fine print carefully. Ultimately, the policies HAVE to make money for the company.

Yeah, I don't see how I wouldn't have *at least* $2000 in repairs over a two year period. I guess I'm lucky that my car is just at that point (going on 9 years old) where I could still purchase one. I'm going to talk to my mechanics first, see if they have an opinion on a provider.

Does anyone have any opinions on the extended warranty companies out there?

I totally agree with Ken, ever since my first Bimmer a used 89 735il I have purchased the aftermarket warranty, that one cost me $1,800. at the time I thought it was a big rip-off. I've always been of the mind that extended warranties are a money maker for the seller. Well maybe thats the case with electronics, but that $1,800. was well spent, the iL had over $10,000. in repairs in the 3 years I had it all covered by the warranty minus the $50. copay. I purchased a 3 year 36,000 mile warranty when i bought my 91 M5 Feb. of 99, at a cost of $2,100 it has already paid for itself plus a couple thousand more in just less then two years. I'm sure it will be picking up the water pump and, lord I hope the self leveling suspension before the 3 years are up.

Don:

Consider yourself lucky, a couple of thousand over two years of ownership is nothing. These cars are very expensive to maintain and you have had it easy.

Warranties are always a good idea, the investment will pay for itself quickly in the case of an M5. I only wish my maintainance costs were that low.

Ken Little
