I'm in the middle of importing several cars right now and let me tell you, it is a major pain in the ass! Yes there is a slight margin, but there is also incredible risk inherent to these transactions. Consider that I wired $40,000 US to Germany in the middle of November and will have nothing to show for my investment for another 2 months AND another $20,000+. It is expensive, risky and not for the faint of heart. I doubt the "facilitator" you spoke of was completely informed of the close to $10,000 it costs to federalize each one of these cars, nor the incredible detail involved to get these cars passed through EPA and DOT.
But on a kinder note, I will be selling two of these cars at a mild mark-up to cover my costs and a small profit. Please email me if interested.

ONLY if you're willing to import it yourself from germany

if so, go to mobile.de (link below) and do a search to find your dream car

an enthusiast living in germany recently posted on the e24 board offering to facilitate such deals for a reasonable fee

some guys are already importing e34 m5's and selling them at a profit, and it can't be too dificult once you realize the steps involved

apparently that import laws have relaxed in many states (except for calif.) so maybe we'll see a rebirth of the gray market era early to mid 1980's!?
